When you discover your webcomic name is already used

Postby molegato » February 15th, 2012, 6:37 pm

So, you start a webcomic, put a cool tittle with very common words, and after a small bit, you discover that there's another webcomic/page/thousands of webcomics/pages with the same name. What to do? This is the doubt I have. Of course I should just have done more research before uploading it, but well, nothing I can do about it now. Shut it down and start over with another different name? Just try to make it different thanks to things on your logo? (like, its not called 'webcomic', it's called 'webcomic!' cause there's an exclamation mark over there. Never mind there's not such symbol on the url or anything)
Well, sorry for just shoot my 'problems' at you, I hope anyone already went trhought that and knows what's best to do.

If it's early enough in the run of the comic, I'd rename it. You don't want someone to read it and like it and say "I read this great comic called Your Comic, you should read it." And their friend goes and googles "Your Comic" and finds the more famous one and reads that instead.

There are plenty of names out there. Even if it's not early, if the name is already registered somewhere else you would likely change it. Also, your originality starts with the title of your comic, if it's an overused word it's harder to get people to get interest in your work.

One thing you can do is to contact the author of the other comic to let them know what is going on. You can have the name on the one that came second changed slightly, and create a link exchange on the startup page between the two comics. That way readers will know, and possibly you willl both end up with more fans!

Well, my webcomic is kind of new, and the other one has been running for a long time, so I dont think a link exchange is viable. I guess I'll just rename it. Just hope the little readers I've got dont get discouraged by that.

I think you should look for something unique...I've heard this more so for books but the idea is that you pick something where a Google search for the title will give your result first, not a trillion other things.

Thanks for the reply, but I changed the comic's name a couple weeks ago
It's now called 'Party plz'. As weird as it may sound, there's no webcomic or webpage with that name, at least not in the first six google pages.

This reminds me of when I was about to launch my comic - I typed "And To Be Loved+webcomic" in the search engine and gingerly looked at the results. Luckily, no one had the name (as far as comics go), so I was golden. But hey, maybe your name change will be more enticing to new readers. Can I ask what the original name was?

When coming up for a name for a comic I always google the ideas I come up with. I don't use anything thats already been done. It usually ends up leaving me with something really weird that no one would want to name their comic like 'satans excrement' but I think its memorable so it works for me.

Always google the names you come up with! And don't pick a stupid name. Pick something interesting, fun, and imaginative. Something clever that people will remember.
