Frostflower's Sketchbook thread

Postby frostflowers » March 26th, 2012, 6:09 am

Hi! I decided to start a sketchbook thread since... well. I'm always scribbling something, and I've always found it fun to look at other people's sketches - it's like a free peek into their creative process - so hopefully, other people will find this fun as well.

I'll post a mixture of pencil sketches, b&w inked stuff and digitally coloured warm-ups - I try to do one every day, though I don't always stick to that schedule. Expect to see all sorts of things, including four-armed fish-ninjas, mobsters, animals and superheroes in sensible boots.

Here's the first sketch I ever made of the main character of my current comic:

Thanks! :D He (she? hir? I haven't really picked a gender, so for now, gender-neutral) is named The Amazing Yolo, and at some point, I think I might make a comic about him/her/hir. I've got another picture over here.

Love the pieces you've posted for sure; you've got a great grasp of line (width, curve, etc.) and it's always nice to look at great sketches :>. The white walker's face looks a bit different when comparing the fullbody and the frontal view, though in the end, I think the important point about that piece is definitely that silhouette. Definitely agreeing that the jester kid is great. Also, the painting you've done of him/her is magnificent ;>

Yeah, I know - I was still trying to settle on the design, so they're a bit different. To be honest, I think the design might have still morphed all over the place while I was drawing the comic, which isn't usually the case (unless I'm drawing a comic over a long period of time, in which case my rising skill level might change the look of the characters).

My characters tend to also look a bit different from time to time, despite the fact that I do have a solid knowledge of their design. Then again, I feel like drawing a character spot-on 100% of the time comes with drawing that character's design over and over again for a long expanse of time (and getting to know it really well). When starting out on the sketches/concepts/beginning comics, it makes some sense for the design to shift a little (though some people can argue that one must familiarize oneself with a design completely first before starting, I think it's probably better to just start rather than spend forever in the planning stages). I noticed mostly because the two drawings were on the same piece of paper and looked like part of one design (frontal, side view) though because it is just a sketch, it doesn't matter nearly as much as if this was happening on the same comic page.

More stuff! Four-armed fish ninja (well, not really, but that's what a friend of mine calls them) and yakuza-characters from a fictional universe full of mobsters that I'm working on in my spare time.

Spoiler! :

Since you like the fish-ninja (his name is Khazri) - here, have another! (This time in colour!)

It's today's warmup, so it's not super-finished, but I'm pretty happy with it.

I'm glad you all like my little fish-ninja, Khazri. :D He shows up in another comic of mine, which I'm currently publishing as a fanzine and selling at Swedish conventions/expos - I'm also selling it online, but the price-list and details are currently in revision, so I haven't got any details on that. I'm hoping to fix that soon-ish, though.

Speaking of, here's another character from the same comic, Fathoms of the Sky:

... Whose boots for some reason turned out ginormous in today's warm-up sketch. o.O

Also, speaking of boots - superheroines should wear sensible ones, for kicking villains in the face and scaling buildings. Also, turtleneck sweaters make it less chilly when fighting said villains at night:
