Last night I mentioned that I was involved in an accident. Well, it was actually a major accident with two other vehicles involved. I was on lunch break and was headed back to work, there's only about two miles of highway between my work and this truck stop I was leaving. Everything happened so quickly, there was a head on collision, a car in my lane and one trying to cut across from the other side. There was in my lane between me and one of the ones that hit. The car in front of me managed to swerve and avoid the wreck, but all I could see was smoke. at the last minute I saw the vehicle in front of me, a silver Camry, I tried to break and swerve but it was too late, I clipped the rear end with my truck. I pulled to stop, my front end was smashed but the damage wasn't so much that I couldn't get out. I went to the Camry and saw that the driver was bleeding. He seemed responsive and I asked if he was ok, he asked if I could get the door open, but it was wedged. His airbags had deployed and I couldn't see into the passenger seat, but other witnesses advised me that his wife was there and that she was not responding clearly. I was also advised that the drive of the other vehicle was entirely unresponsive. I stuck around to respond to police and answer any questions I could. After filling out an affidavit I had found out that someone from my unit, I'm a corrections officer, had come to check on the accident. A traffic sergeant advised me that the other three individuals had suffered fatal injuries as result of the initial collision and that my involvement was minor and would have had no effect on the survival of those individuals either way. Everyone I spoke to that night assured me that my involvement had nothing to do with fatalities and that there was nothing I could have done and that the ages of the victims who were all senior citizens was a contributing factor in both the cause and the result of accident. I still feel so horrible, I witnessed these events almost in their entirety, I spoke to one the deceased, even at the time it was only apparent that he was injured, and I was completely undamaged aside from my vehicle. It was very difficult to type this, but I did want to clarify the situation and express my feelings. My heart goes out to the families of the deceased, and please drive carefully you guys.
