Table-Top RPG's/Board Games/TCG's... Physical Game central!

Postby Seven Rain » February 29th, 2012, 1:14 am

Long title is long.
So after a bit of posting in this thread here, (in fact if a mod could merge it with this one when they find the time that'd be great~) I figured it wouldn't hurt to make a thread for games of the physical variety. Sure they're not Video Games, but some Video Games have actually been based on Table-Top RPGs and Board Games so hell, why not make this a place to discuss those as well? Come ooonnn, don't deny it. We've all played a crummy digital version of a board game at some point. I still remember playing Sorry on my Grandpa's computer when I was a kid, complete with crappy CGI cutscenes and cheesy one-liners.

Image
ImageImage
Table-Tops, Board Games, Trading Cards Games, everything in between, discuss it here.
From nostalgic Pokemon cards to nerdy D&D to tried and true classics like Monopoly to collectibles like Mage Knight and Heroclix.

I myself was inspired to hunt down Heroscape again after spending a bit of time in the aforementioned thread. Heroscape is a fun little Table-Top RPG, with less depth than something like D&D but an addicting collection aspect and the ability to build your own terrain and scenarios and such.

Among other things of this variety I've always enjoyed the Pokemon TCG, and still have several themed decks rubber-banded up in the drawers of my room somewhere, ready to take a quick refresher course of the rules and take on anyone that issues a challenge in this house. I've also played my fair share of Board Games, Battleship, Monopoly, Sorry, Trouble, even the occasional Risk when I could get someone to commit to it.
I find D&D interesting, but I also find the idea of playing it seriously a bit out of the question considering my lifelong obsession with games of the video variety, which doesn't leave much time for something like D&D when you also factor in comic work and cartoons/TV/Movies/etc. I doubt I could ever commit to D&D, as much as I wish I could.

Now let's see if we can keep this thread alive~
Spoiler! :
Due to how different this thread is from all the VG-related threads I would even suggest that it be stickied if it generates some discussion but I don't wanna push it.

I'm generally in with Heroscape and Yugioh.

Though I'm a closet nerd about it because of all the Magic players on campus. And they hate Yugioh.

Scrabble. That right there is one of the best games. A bit disappointing that QUIXOTIC and QUIZZING are both 26 points (there's only one Z so you have to use the blank tile which is worth nothing, and you need to play off of someone elses letter, because you only get seven). Your Q words are the best: QUINCE, QILIN, QUESTION. Just tons. I take my time playing.

My favorite Scrabble move is to place a Q or X like this:
Code: Select all
QI
I

on a triple letter score. Easy 60 points.
Other board games I enjoy are Monopoly or Risk (usually with some house rules to speed the pace of the game up), Settlers of Catan, Chess, Chinese Checkers. Connect Four is alright but a little shallow. In Battleship I have this move where I put all my ships on top of each other. If my opponent gets lucky they sink me in like 7 turns.

I really liked the Pokemon TCG but due to power inflation on the newer cards my classic Pokemon are all too weak now (same with my Dragonball Z cards). I never owned a Yu-Gi-Oh deck but played plenty at my friends' houses with their decks. I've only ever done tabletop RP'ing once but it was a blast and I'd very much like to try again.

There was a time when I used to always play the Pokemon TCG. I went to this little league place at a shop, and played against others for only one dollar admission and we got points and stuff whether we won or lost. It was a once a week thing and was pretty fun at the time.

But the more I played, the more tired of the TCG I grew. They're so damn expensive, and they keep coming out with new sets every so often that nearly everyone else would quickly jump on, except for me. I'm just not made of that kind of money to update my decks every time a new series comes out every, what, two months or so? I eventually just stopped going. Quite unfortunate as I had bought a new deck the week before I stopped coming, but hey.

AWW SNAP A BUMP.

I'm pumped, you guys... I just found this wholesale site that has old discontinued stuff like YuYu Hakusho, DBZ and even .hack trading cards! Like whole boxes of Boosters for crazy cheap!
They also have stuff like Pokemon but none of the old packs. Just the newer stuff that you can still find in stores but those are expensive as hell. The aforementioned three however are awesome and cheaper than dirt!

I'm crazy excited, I just hope it's not one of those things where they sell stuff out quickly... If this stuff isn't still around when I get paid in May I'll be heart-broken.
Spoiler! :
I know "wholesale" is supposed to be stuff for businesses and not individuals, but after checking out the cart and the site and everything I see no indication that I can't just order these like I would order stuff from any other site. <3
Hope I'm right and that there isn't some catch they get you with when trying to checkout.

*EDIT*
THEY HAVE MAGEKNIGHTS TOO WHAT THE FUCK IS GOING ON THIS IS TOO GOOD TO BE TRUE.

WHY CAN'T THAT BE HERE?!

I'm about to make your day awesome.
Spoiler! :

They don't have a ton of Digimon stuff, (What they do have you can find under "Other CCG",) but I'm still getting my hands on dat Blister Box Lot.
I should warn you, though, the shipping ain't cheap. That's why after this little first order of mine I'm only gonna make massive orders every once in a blue moon instead of tons of smaller ones here and there. I'd rather buy over a hundred bucks worth of cards and pay 20 dollars in shipping than regularly make a bunch of spread-out 20-50 dollar orders with 12 dollar shipping every time.

That shipping IS steep. But still. I shed the nerdiest tear when I saw the site.

MAH MAN! Even though this thread will probably die again real soon. Oh well.
But anyways... I know, right!? I had a constant feeling of "This is too amazing to be real..." while I was looking through the cards/collectibles and prices there.

Well, the 4th edition rules for Dungeons & Dragons are essentially set up like an MMORPG; it's pretty terrible, really.

30 bucks. Including shipping.
If you take 30 bucks up to the toy store right now you'd be lucky to walk away with like 6 packs of cards.

I started playing a table top game named Exalted with a couple of friends. Its a lot more fun than I expected it would be.

As for board games, I love Scrabble and Chinese Checkers. I want to play Risk since I never got the chance before.
Any SJ related questions? Feel free to look around, and if you can't find an answer, make a topic here and we'll get to you as fast as we can! :D

I am Huuuuuge into board games, shelves and shelves of them at home. I'll just go through a brief list of some of my favorites.

Arkham Horror: Amazing game set in Lovecrafts world, can be played single player but is much more fun with multiple people. There are twists around every corner while you try to shut portals which are constantly feeding monsters into the world and reopening all over the damned place.

Starcraft: Yep, not the PC game, the board game. It's a really interesting mix of Risk and a CCG. It's a bit hard to learn at first, but it's incredibly fun to play once you get the hang of it.

Dominion: Personally my favorite deck building game. You start out with a few cards in your hand worth some change and you use that to buy more cards to add to your overall deck. You are constantly building towards a strategy to beat your opponents while building the best deck you can. If you like CCGs then give this game a try, you won't regret it.

Castle Ravenloft: This is a D&D based board game which is in itself a random dungeon generator. I love this game for so many reasons. 1 it can really kick your ass, and quick. 2 it's a blast not only to play with others but to take on yourself as well. 3 it's incredibly flexible and easy to work in house rules and your own stories. 4 I love the tile sets and have used them in D&D campaigns to great success. If you enjoy dungeon crawling and some round about D&D rules then this game will give you an incredible bang for your buck. I've even modified the rules to create a successful PvP version of the game which is a ton of fun.

Man I could keep going on for awhile, like a long while. Zombies, House on Haunted Hill, Mansions of Madness, and so many others. All really really freaking great games.

I've also DM'ed for quite a few years now too, I love D&D 3.5, just got done with a 4.0 campaign and I think we all decided that it was pretty Meh. But now I've found Pathfinders, and I've quickly fallen in love with it. If you liked D&D 3.0 or 3.5 and haven't checked out Pathfinders, then get off your ass and do it, it's frakin amaze-balls!

Awww yiss, DIS HAUL.
140 bucks can buy you 1 and a half boxes of Pokemon or Magic boosters, or it can buy you this;
Image
Count 'em.
5 boxes of .hack//ENEMY, 3 Yu Yu Hakusho TCG boxes, one of them 1st Edition boosters.
8 ENEMY Starter Sets, 2 SD Gundam TCG Starter Sets.
25 Top Loaders, 100 Sleeves and 100 Pages.
Image
Spoiler! :
I actually meant to post this the other day but forgot until someone bumped the second TCG thread today.

Now I'm gonna go back to being the only one caring about these cards and about haul pics.

erase wrote:I don't play cards, I just collect them >>

I'd love to play Yu Yu Hakusho or .hack//ENEMY if I can talk my friends into trying 'em, but I love collecting too.
If you still collect cards, you should check out my new trading card stomping ground. The shipping is steep, so it's best to order in bulk, but damn is it amazing. <3
As you can see above, buying the right series can get your boatloads of cards for crazy cheap. They also got some Mage Knights, which I wanna get my hands on one of these days since they rebooted it into some weird board game. My local gaming/comics/collectibles store doesn't have any of the old ones, so Hill's is really my only hope for classic Mage Knight.
