American comics compete against manga, 'nuff said.

I'm more annoyed by the "RObama" thing... but I'm not sure why it bothers me so much.
My original manga is indefinitely on hiatus (sorry!).
It is going to be gutted and restarted because I started it prematurely.

I just consider it bad taste when real world VIPs are splatted into a comic like that (not blatant parody). Feels like cheap marketing.
Plus there's that same irksome feel of when you read fan-fiction that doesn't respects the canons of the world it's set in.

That image of "Robama" is actually Cyborg as he appears in the New 52 line. They just pasted the flag thing to be funny(?).

I always read the title of this thread as if someone is complaining about a specific forum-goer on SJ- "This poster pisses me off! Look at all the horrible things they've been posting!"

I always think, "It'd be funny if people start submitting posts about people they dislike."

Oh god...I thought that was a parody. Really, DC?

And yes I thought this thread was going to complain about somebody. :D

From the owner of the comic shop that used this poster from over at Bleeding Cool:
Jason, hey I respect your opinions on here and what you add to the BC forums (I lurk). I just totally feel that something can both be a joke and a promotion. It can get noticed. I'm not at all anti-manga or a super patriot. I do know that plenty of manga/anime fans have been giving dc new 52 books a try. I've been having plenty of anime events at my shop, and I know plenty of them like to and try to trade in their used books.

With this I was planning to get some manga kids to try a DC #1 by just trading in something in their room. Then the plan was to have a big "try a used manga volume 1 sale" to make up my cost and get people to try some manga.

I feel most all my customers and most all genre pop culture fans are pretty post-racist and post-nationalist that this is just a funny play on the cover of the books.

As far as a nod I said "limit one per american citizen"...

I felt the need to post his actual response to this thread because even though blankd posted that link to his comments, nobody seemed to follow up on it.

I don't really get why everyone is so upset by this. It's a marketing strategy to get people to try something new, what's the big deal? If you notice (which, this should have been obvious by the fact that he specifies that the trade is for a Volume 1 manga) he says that his next step is to sell those used manga volumes to other customers so that they, in turn, can try something new. By making a joke about "buying American" at a comic store that obviously also sells Japanese comics, he's clearly not against non-American comics, he just wants comic fans to open their minds to work from artists they normally wouldn't buy. I know I've got a bunch of Manga Vol. 1s sitting around that I picked up for a dollar at used book stores and stuff, so I'd gladly trade them for Animal Man, or All-Star Western. I mean, have you seen the art in the new Animal Man? It's incredible! And completely different than the DC house style. By allowing yourself to be upset by this poster, you, in fact, are the close-minded ones. Also, why get so defensive when people crack jokes about manga vs. super heroes? We're all in this together. All comics, from all nations, working together to promote a form of storytelling. There's no need for negativity between the fans of different cultures, next time just take a step back and look at what you might have said about American Mainstream books and how that might make another fan feel.

Unless of course, you're annoyed by the somewhat racist pairing of Cyborg and Obama... Which, even that is pretty funny, if you look at it as "We've only had one black president, and DC's only got like one good black super hero."

"One per American citizen." That's priceless. Try that at a McDonalds or some other franchise and wait for the backlash.

Honestly, I see the add to be in bad taste even if he plans to re-sell the manga anyway. There are better ways that could have been done, so I think I'm going to stay away from DC comics for a while (sorry Batman) and just read Dark Horse comics, or some of the many manga series I've yet to start. If DC would be a part of a distasteful ad like that, they don't need my money. Conan the Barbarian (Dark Horse) is better anyways, so I won't miss much, and I need to take something off my list to afford the IDW comics I was looking at.
Tell Everybody I'm on my way, whatever way that may be - be it the road less traveled by, or the road I'll someday die. As long as I'm amused, I'll be fine.

This isn't a DC official ad. It was just an ad for the local comic book store it was posted in. Not that I'm lobbying for you to buy DC comics, when there are so many other choices out there, but this shouldn't be the reason you don't buy from them.
