This poster pisses me off!!

Postby gevans1961 » January 17th, 2012, 5:00 pm

Are DC's sales really low or something because, this comes off as fucking desperate.

I don't get why they think manga is so inferior? I'm surprised they haven't put any manga influences into their comic art, yet? I mean they even made a Batman anime, a few years back.

I'm not really sure I understand why you find this "desperate" and "pisses you off". Would you mind explaining?

Also, Robama is probably the coolest thing I've heard in a while.

Hmm... If people like manga more, they wouldn't want to trade. So, it sounds like they think people would like to have one of those New 52's if they don't have to buy it? That, and I think they want people to get interested enough to buy them in the future, like a free sample type thing. I've seen trade in type things before, but I forget what products those were now.

The big words sound like one of those old Uncle Sam posters, and I never really liked that type of thing. I'm not sure exactly what I don't like about it, but... maybe it's something about pressuring people into things, or making it sound like "if you're a good American, you'd do this"? And "Robama wants You to buy American!" just sounds stupid to me. Too hyped up and stuff. Probably mostly because of the "!" and how I always picture a fake-sounding voice for the Sam posters.

A call to patriotism to increase sales? It doesn't actually piss me off, but i do find it very wrong.
I honestly hope that this will actually turn out to be a poor marketing strategy.

They're basically encouraging a form of comic-racism (let's call it so), instead of bringing competition based on quality products, with a creative team to develop better stories, art, dialogues and concepts.
As someone who supports creativity, i can't approve of this move.

I personally find this sort of marketing darkly hilarious and a callback to... less than pleasant times that will just bring out more debate than actual marketing.

Then again, the PR for DC isn't precisely the brightest... Regardless I hope they learn a greater message from all of this.

I actually thought this was a joke at first xD Took me a minute, there!
I just think it's pretty funny. I (personally) read manga because it's more aesthetically pleasing, the characters and stories are more interesting, and they don't all feel the same. This is all my opinion, of course, but most American comics seem to have the same idea (superheroes), and it seems that there is always a buxom love interest with no will of her own and a tendency to get herself into life-or-death situations, only to be saved at the last minute by the hero. o.e (Yes, that sometimes pops up in manga, too; but it's easy to stay away from it.)
In my experience, anyway. If people like manga, they sure aren't going to make that trade; likewise, I feel like there's a chance of someone actually buying manga in order to get that deal. xD

This brings me to a question: has DC ever tried to release a non-superhero series in the last 10 years or so?

Becasue the reason why i don't buy their stuff is because i don't like supers*, simple as that.

*I actually find them as annoying as hack-cheaters in online games.

I don't anything DC or marvel but, I do know they like to update the same same super heroes, over and over.

I can see how this would rub folks the wrong way. While the message is poking at the whole Uncle Sam thing, it has this odd sting to it, kinda hard to describe...

It's what happens when you try to make money from 50-60+ year old stories AND try to keep them up to date with the times. Basically, the 'New 52' run of the DC comics takes all the old story arcs and sweeps them under the rug and started over again from issue 1. This also leaves about a ton of unfinished story arcs that were just left hanging, but I guess they're okay with it. :/

Uhh lol. Thats a poster for an individual shop's sales trade, not DC in itself...

What a waste... a manga volume is at least 10 dollars these days, while DC issues run about $3.99. They'd be better off selling the manga and then buy a couple DC volumes. (I don't know why anyone would really wanna do that, though, most of the new DC really irked me.) But yeah, regardless of where this ad came from, it's not at all a fair trade.

Well obviosly the whole point of this ad is to "start a bit of a riot", as the person who started that thread wrote on the first page... they're not exactly being subtle about it!
Don't kid yourselves that DC aren't behind this ad; they paid 75% of the costs, which probably means that the shop owner paid the rest in return for the publicity for his own store. In other words, they made a deal.
You know what, I think the maybe the best thing to do here is to simply stop talking about it...

When I first saw the ad, I thought right off that DC isn't behind it. No way the company would do that since they have some of their comics and cartoons made by Japanese artists. Wouldn't make any sense. It's the store itself that made the ad, so it would be their stupidity for putting it out. Plus DC might want to take a look into it since it does make them look bad. Might want to send the ad their way and tell them your concerns. Comic shops like to do things without thinking it through properly. The guy is probably having lots of kids coming in asking for manga and ignoring his favorite Superman comic. ._.;

To respond to some of the comments here, please, take a look at this link before replying to this thread. Thank you!
It is stated that the comic shop owner does have a lot of anime/manga in his shop and that he's even doing events for fans.

Personally, I don't like the "buy american" thing at all and I agree, it does leave a bad taste in my mouth when I think about the whole poster but it's still important to keep in mind that the creator of it might have meant no harm in makingg it. We only assume that he must be an asshole that hates manga because of this statement but do we know it for sure? No. All I can add is, do your research before freaking out or flaming someone for being "a hater" or anything else.
