SJ-style, Can you make your episode in 1 WEEK?!!

Postby Mustayaki » January 12th, 2012, 10:16 pm

Hey guys and girls

I guess like many of you, I've been daydreaming how cool it would be to have your manga professionaly serialized. Imagine Shonen Jump absolutely loves your work! They want it, NO!..they NEED to have it!! What an offer would that be!!!
But like my old webshooter taught me; "with great power,..." So, I couldn't help wondering, would I be up to it?...
Creating 20 fresh hot pages in a week,...for a lóooooooooooooooong time!!!

Are YOU up for this? Okay, maybe you'll need assistants but still, would you be able to produce a new story, new characters, new settings, new concepts and work this all out in 20 pages, within a week time?..

Btw, I think I could make it if I would have some great assistants to back me up but there goes my social life...
- "Dude, what social life!!! You are Drawing pictures!!!"
Uhm,....o yeah! ^_^;

I can barely draw two pages in a week even without any kind of a social life, so probably not. I really don't think I'll be good enough to be published any time soon, though.
I have to wonder how professionals don't end up with carpal tunnel. My hand starts cramping up pretty quickly :S

This. xD
Kudos to those who can, but I personally couldn't juggle that and my social life.
Maybe if it was my actual job.

That would be the point right? Getting serialized by Shonen JUMP, that would make it your job.

but the thing is they are not going to serialize anyone. It wouldnt work to rpomise something that probably wont happen.
Besides have you seen shounen jump? Those things are HUGE! It would be asking alot to add even 20 pages to that thing.

It's a "what if scenario", btw if you manga is super good don't you think they will find a way to serialized it? But my question isn't about if it gets serialized.
I'm talking about what if your manga gets serialized, I hope that there are mangaka on this platform that have this ambition, could you make 20 pages In a week? And yes this would be your job where you earn a lot of money with...

First of, I would have to put an axe in my router, and stop meeting people forever.

Then I guess I'd just have to draw a lot?

I'd have to do a shitton of drugs.

When I was in high school I did a shitton of drug- uh, i mean, when I was in high school I did two separate comic projects that required me to kind of do what OP is suggesting. For a grade I made a comic compiling a bunch of characters from the books we'd read that semester. I ended up both times putting it off until the last week or so. I overestimated my abilities a little bit, and wound up staying up until about 4 a.m. each time to finish them. I think each was somewhere around 25 pages long.

However, this is something I couldn't replicate now, principally because those projects consisted only of dialogue and line-art, and were not colored or even inked. To do a single page of my comic now requires (depending on the number of characters, detail of the background, and complexity of digital editing) anywhere from 5 to maybe 8 hours. 20 pages in a week then would be at least 100 hours of the 168 available hours of the week. I mean, it's po9ssible that some production would be minimized due to doing everything all at once, but I think that reductino would be minimal, maybe shaving three hours off or so, it's hard to say.

If other people were working on it for me, it would feel as if it weren't my comic anymore. Perhaps in the future I'll collaborate with others, but seeing as art is a hobby for me as opposed to a profession, I prefer to work alone.

I'm tempted to say if I were to do a simpler (writingwise) project and it was literally my JOB I could do 20ish decent pages. If the art AND writing was simpler, maybe I could do it (even with schooling and/or another job), but I don't see much point to doing it "just because I can meet the deadline".

I think the closest SJ tries to do this at is when March Madness rolls around or one of the other delightfully alliterated months and that's 20 or 30 pages in a month or something. :P

Yeah, no. One comic takes about 3-4 hours to do, the other takes 5-10 hours. Even in the off-chance I get my hands on a mountain crystal meth, dropped out of college, and kept drawing non-stop, I'd end up with 42-56 strips on one (but comic strips collections tend to put about three or four strips on a page, so that's a drop in the bucket), and about 16-33 pages on the other, which isn't a sizable number of pages.

I could do 20 pages of line art a week, but I'd have someone else for shading. With assistants, I could probably do over thirty pages a week. Not well, but I could do it. ;)

You know the artists have assistants right? Some to draw the backgrounds, other to ink the black spots and apply screentones, etc. Of course they probably have 0 free time and very little sleep.
I think it would take time being that efficient, and lots of practice and confidence in your lines.
