Who's your favourite comic hero?

He just seemed to rush right in to things a few times without stopping to think at all. That doesn't necessarily mean he's stupid I guess, more that he doesn't rely on his intelligence.

It really depends on who's writing him, and most people who are put in charge of writing him don't have imagination, most modern writers grew up with "grim and gritty" stories, and try shoving him into that genre, when he does not fit. Superman works when you actually have an imagination. If you use your imagination when writing, you can even do some very well written drama.

My biggest issue with him is that he has no conventional weaknesses. Batman, Spidey, etc can all be harmed by normal methods. Things like, you know, bullets. A "common" thug poses no threat to Supes, only super-powered bad guys do. This forces the writers to have to constantly come up with someone who can pose a threat to Superman, which in my opinion, dilutes the story. I mean crap, even the Hulk can get shot.

OH NO! THE WRITERS HAVE TO ACTUALLY USE THEIR IMAGINATION FOR ONCE? BUT THE WRITERS DON'T HAVE AN IMAGINATION! WHAT DO WE DOOOOOO?

I'm usually in the "Superman is kinda boring" boat, but Grant Morrison's "All-Star Superman" was quite good. Alternatively, Superdickery makes him much more enjoyable. But also a dick.



To contribute: it's hard for me to pick a favorite superhero. I really like Batman (of course, everyone likes Batman) but in terms of entertainment and powers-I-want-to-have, it's gotta be Plastic Man. He used to be a small-time crook, but was turned into deranged real-life cartoon character who can transform into a table or a car or whatever he wants. Kyle Baker did a really good run of Plastic Man, y'all should check it out. Definitely more comedy than action though!

In terms of teams of heroes, Fantastic Four is probably my favorite. Not because they're good at their jobs or have badass powers (well, there's a stretchy guy again...), but because I find their dysfunctional family dynamic to be really funny. Mr. Fantastic is an autistic asshole, the Invisible Woman is a total repressed 50's housewife, the Human Torch is an impulsive douchebag, and the Thing is borderline mentally impaired (as a side note, Venture Bros parodied their dynamic really well with the Impossibles). Put them together and you've got a super-powered broken home that has to fight planet-eating gods! It's great!

It occurs to me to note here that I'm not really trying to convince anyone to not like Superman, just stating the reasons I'm not a fan. I enjoy comics that put me in the shoes of the characters and allow me to empathise with them. I know a lot of people read comics for the complete opposite though, and they want the escape from any feeling of normality. To me Superman is too hard to feel any compassion or association with, as he doesn't seemingly face any of the problems a normal person does.

Also, Superdickery is goddamn amazing. Props for reminding me of it

I think my favorite heros as a kid and even now were Robin and Nightcrawler. I know they weren't the strongest and the best but I really liked them.
I used to like superman, but I always thought he was one of those characters that had to many abilities and few weaknesses which is why I prefered batman as a kid cause he had no powers and relied on his strength and gadgets.

Daredevil.

I...don't even know WHY. I just do. I think it was because when I was very very young, I was told there was a distinct possibility I would be blind by high school(thankfully, they were wrong, but I'm very, very close). For some odd reason, a blind superhero was comforting. Also Dr. Strange but that is ENTIRELY because he was based off of Vincent Price.

Not sure if anyone has mentioned them, but I would say Tin Tin and Capt. Haddock belong at the top of western comic heros.

I also really love Batman, but that's more the animated series than the comics.
Anyway, on the whole Superman debate, in my opinion he only works good against more fantastic threats such as Darkseid, Braniac, Zod etc. (Sorry if I got any names wrong, I'm not that big a fan of Superman)

Superman has always been my #1 hero. I actually like the fact that he is powerful and can take a beating.
The problem is, he has so much potential, yet the writers fail to tap even a small percentage of this. And they constantly make him out to be an All-American Boy Scout.
This actually makes me weary about getting any of the Superman comics. Which is a shame because I really want to own some western comics.


The Silver Surfer has recently gained my interest. Haven't learnt much about him yet but would love to get some of his comics too. I got interested in him through watching the Fantastic Four movie - needless to say the SS was the best thing about that movie.


Ghost Rider is another, and again, I'm yet to find any decent sounding comics about him. It's annoying because Marvel and DC have some pretty awesome characters and artists, but their writer seem to suck.

My favorite X-Men superhero is Nightcrawler.

I will see your ludicrously-over-powered!Superman, and raise you Stardust the Super-Wizard. Imagine Superman at the height of his powers in a universe with nothing more powerful than a few Nazi-sympathizers with weird tanks...and also, he's a preachy douche. If it were made today, it would be a hilarious parody of Superman and similar characters, but it was made back in the Golden Age by a guy that was probably crazy--he created this, a similar jungle-girl version that was also obscenely over-powered and utterly unopposed, a space hero, a tough-guy lumberjack...all of his characters were more like angry gods punishing the unjust than real characters. Stardust mostly flies around in space in a rigid pose, his "delicate detecting unit" (not pictured) tuned to listen to Earth for threats to America; he could move planets, turn people into things, create matter from thought, reprogram robots with his mind, and turn himself into a man-sized star.

But he's not my favorite. I'm a Machine Man man: Aaron Stack, X-51, starting with NextWAVE and onwards. I'm a big fan of the whole NextWAVE series, but you said "hero" and Dirk Anger is a psycho that makes Deadpool look like Batman, so Aaron Stack it is. I like his detached attitude; he saves the world because it would be very difficult to obtain snack foods, beer and pornography if the human race were extinguished. If he wasn't so stoic about it all, he would remind me of Bender from Futurama, but as it is, with that bemused look on his face, the constantly furrowed brow and terse scowl...I think he's just got Asperger's. I like that in a superhero.
