A Philosophical Thought On Deteriorating Spriters

Postby traca » June 18th, 2011, 9:48 pm

Sprites are good, genuine, creative fun. Working on something for a week and having people go "Good job!" makes it come with a feeling on content. Sadly, my view of the spriters is the polar opposite. BTW, before I begin my rant, no offense to the people referenced.

First is ??????. Give or take a year ago, on a small, happy webcomic known as "The Spriters Apartment" started by kind newbie who I remember as Skylar. ??????? was a acceptable spriter with nice sprites and fair comic-making skills. Frankly I've seen her as a damn rude girl. Clogging up a "sprite showcase" with stupid Xat chats, the showcase (in my opinion ) is a crackpot little place held up by spam. Time changes, don't it...

Next is to a good 70% of spriters I see. Egos which make them feel superior, making them douches, if for lack of better words. Them there's ?????. Spriting skills are quite great, but his huge ego shows through all of it. Due to my love of quotes and love of science, I made up this equation, which describes how I feel in the most fundamental sense:
Spriting skill = feels superior = gets bigger ego = feels more powerful = "power corrupts"

So this is what I think. No guarantee I'll ever look at this again, so one last message: For you spriters out there, I hope one day you can humble yourselves.

If you have a problem with those spriters, it would be best you talk with them via PM or on their sprite showcase, not calling them out on forum they may or may not view.

It's called full market penetration.

It's OK to rant, just no name calling.

Probably shouldn't have said names.

But yes they are many spriters with horrid egos and just bad, some are actually good spriters but most are horrible.
Also I'm a spriter and I'm not like that at all. Then again I fail and don't really fit into the generalization you mention. However, there are many good spriters whom aren't like that.

Oh, yeah, I'm sorry about that. Some spriters are like that, and it's only what I've seen. This, in no way, coyunts for everyone. Also, the main article has been edited to not use names. Anyone who saw the names, please do not mention them.

I thought this board was like dead because the spriter community genuinely don't use the forums.....Guess not.

I have like no ego when it comes to sprites. Like at all. Probably because I kinda suck. Or it could be that I just like drawn art better but sprite because I have little confidence in my drawing skills.

You keep calling them spriters. The word 'Spriter' (while not a real word and therefore not properly defined) largely implies a person who makes sprites.

I'm under the impression that's not the case here as any one who actually makes sprites wouldn't bother making an entire comic of unique sprites because that would be head-ache inducing to the extreme.

Why don't we refer to them as copy-pasters, instead?

What a rather crude statement. I'm not really going to go past that since I'm a nice person, but I'll say you've got some things to learn. Or something like that, anyways.

Not particularly, I believe the word spriter implies actually spriting, which is act of creating a sprite.

If you're one of those folks who makes sprites for their comic then good on you, I don't have the patience for it although I can make some decent sprites.

There's nothing offensive or condescending about the term 'copy-paster' albeit I suppose 'arranger' sounds nicer.

I have nothing in particular to learn about spriting, nor spriters. It's application is too limited unfortunately, only use spriting has is for Dwarf Fortress and Minecraft, for me, of course.

Semantics is a horrible case for making new terms for a previously established and generally well known and accepted term. Altering and changing something to create something new is still creation. Not that I'm into the whole screwing with sonic and megaman sprites, but let them have their fun.

The point is, whether intended or not, it is a rather bad statement to make and can be taken rudely. Walking over other people carelessly, even without a malicious meaning, is still distasteful.

Actually, a spriter is someone who edits sprites(pixel art made for videogames). spritecomics are comics made with sprites.

Someone who makes pixelart from scratch is a pixel artist. The idea being that a spriter can only edit sprites, while a pixel artist has technically a far wider range. You rarely if not ever see a genuine pixelart comic with these rules though.(A comic not made up from repeating graphics like sprites, yet still pixel art)

Likewise someone who edits doll-bases is a doller.

Ontopic: eh, even non-sprite have their arrogant assholes. Comes with the territory.

Actually, that's still a sprite comic, as it has repeating elements. A sprite is a graphic that is reused a lot of times in an overal piece(such as a game). So even if those sprites are made from scratch, it's still a sprite comic.
A pixelart comic would be having the same kind of shots as a non-pixelart comic, yet still follow the rules of good pixelart(limited pallete, efficient use of space)
