Smack Jeeves Mobile Beta

Postby Admin » May 23rd, 2011, 12:48 pm

Good news, everyone!

We've been hard at work over the past few weeks working on something special. Do you own a smartphone? Have you ever wanted to read comics on your phone while on the train, on the toilet, or at church? Well, we're making one giant step towards making that a reality.

What we've created is the Smack Jeeves Mobile Comics Reader to allow comic authors to easily set-up a mobile comic reading experience for their webcomic. We think we've worked out all of the kinks, and we're looking for some guinea pigs to try it out. For those of you interested in participating, please post in this thread stating so. The only requirements are that you own a smartphone and you are the author of an established webcomic on Smack Jeeves.

To get a preview of the mobile comics reading experience, head on over to http://twocakes.smackjeeves.com/ on your smartphones.

I guess the "smartphone" requirement should be changed to "recent smartphone" xP My Nokia E61 is too old to even pick up the fact that there's a mobile version.
Busy, busy.

I would love to try this out! I have an android samsung!

This is awesome, I have tried reading comics on my phone before and sometimes people's custom page images over lap the page and I can't read it. XD

I've got an iPhone, and the Two Cakes site seems to be working well on it so far. I'd be happy to help test with either of my comics or to give feedback on how they're working on my phone. Let me know if and when there's anything I can specifically do to help.

Huh; makes me want to get a iphone for that commute to school; those traffic jams are quite long; it'd be nice to read it whilst on the go. probably won't happen D:

I wish there was a quick button to add or preview comments on that particular page though. Also, what exactly counts as an established comic on smackjeeves? If any of my comics are eligible, I'd be glad to participate as well.

I own an iPhone, so I don't know if this works for androids, but for that problem, I've noticed that if you place on finger on the actual page of the comic, and use your other finger to swipe while that first finger is still placed on the comic, then you could move the page over to see the parts that are hidden by the template.
Any SJ related questions? Feel free to look around, and if you can't find an answer, make a topic here and we'll get to you as fast as we can! :D

We should also be able to make mobile-only comics.

Ahh yes That is like the zoom feature in on the phones, Yes I do do that but there were some were that trick would not work no mater what I did. XD;

Now that I am off work I can check out the page! WOOO!! This is way awesome!

I'm having a hard time navigating it though. The swipe seems to not read it some times Maybe its just something to get use to. I don't know if I like the zoom feature. I zoom in then it flips over to the other side of the page. I not all comics are set up in that four panel layout, so we may have panels/bubbles chopped in half making it hard to read text or see all of what is going on.
I think I would like it more if we could drag out finger around to move the page where we want in the zoom mode.
thats my bit of feedback. =3

Other then that, I LOVE THIS FEATURE!!!! I love you Smack Jeeves for doing this! =D

Edit: to be honist, this feedback may not be such a big deal its something where I would need to see it in a different format comic. =3

Will this mobile browser be handheld gaming system friendly, too? You know, for the likes of the 3DS, NGP, PSP or DSi, which dont have more than 128 MB of RAM.

I have checked out the site and it works very well on my Palm Pre. The buttons did not have weird placement errors and I could vote on a page. The page selector worked and I could leave comments if I wanted. But that's just my web browser. I would love to volunteer to help test the mobile site, if you need more volunteers. c:

EDIT: Noticed you said only Androids and iPhones. I don't know how similar WebOS is to other Smartphone browsers, but every time I've visited a mobile site thus far, it displays very similarly to iPhones.

I went to the preview site on a Nokia E61, and it shows me the full version, as far as I can tell. I tried going to CNN.com to check whether the browser was just too fancy, but apparently not - CNN's mobile version displayed for me.

From reading the other posts, I guess this is an app sort of deal rather than a simple mobile version? My smartphone's definitely not fancy enough for that.

It is a mobile version that behaves very much like an app. Smack Jeeves Mobile is currently only enabled for iPhones and Android phones, as those are the only ones I've been able to test on. I can add support for more phones when I can get my hands on them for testing.

Just meaning you've been around a little while and are still active. If you want specifics, let's say the requirements are you have at least 30 pages published and have been around for at least a month and update at least once a week.

Could you explain in more detail what you're trying to do, what's happening, and how it's different from what you're expecting?
