My 1.3 recap:
Writable books aren't that interesting or useful except for adventure maps (and possibly pranks). They are a nice feature in that regard, however.
Tripwires... very obvious (if you're looking for them), but too trap-like for me. I'm one to prefer the "silent" player sensors, such as edited-in mob spawners and the minecart/particle exploit, but in a survival setting such as Server Paradox, I'll only use them if I absolutely have to.
Stackable signs: YES! I have been waiting for so long to have this in the game, especially with mob systems and water control. The 3-per-craft is nice as well, but I was only hoping for the general stacking of them.
Enchanting is nice, but I still wanted to see the experience counted back (when enchanting with a remainder) by the experience itself, and not by the level. That being said, it is definitely a lot better than it was before in terms of how much is necessary to get to the maximum level.
Being more of an SMP player as of late, I quite welcome the merging of SSP and SMP. The code updates will be a lot faster now, and SSP maps can be shared instantly (for example, when letting others test a map). I'm not entirely sure about the problems in SSP that come from this change, but it's not much of my concern at the moment.
There seems to be a little bit of a sound delay in SMP, however; probably caused by a connection between the sound and the update. I hope it gets changed soon, since this is quite offputting.
Why in the world would they base the rotation of the logs off of the cross-section? It's going to be a pain to work with logs now, especially since placing them looking at about eye level makes them lie down sideways. They should have instead worked it like stairs and slabs: whichever side you put it on makes it face in that direction. On the most part it's pretty good, but the way they worked it is a pain.
Trading: only good for getting emeralds, but that being said, emerald blocks look fantastic. That's the whole reason I have a trading depot in my station.
There is a noticeable lack of variation in the temples, but at least they're a good source of TNT, emeralds and pistons. Nothing dangerous unless something spawns inside the desert temples (because of the pressure plate).
I know I've missed some stuff, and I may update this if anyone needs anything else explained or expanded on. As a whole, though, 1.3 is great and I accept it with open arms.
