Quite frankly, I don't even mind reboots or sequels. Sure, some suck (think most horror movie reboots ever) but they all have the possibility of being great, just like everything else.

Personally, I hated the first trilogy of Spider-Man movies. They were cheesy in all the wrong ways and just weren't very fun. I think this one looks like it has the potential to be more fun, but they could still muddy it up. The "dark", "edgy" look they have going kinda worries me, but nothing in the trailers has really made me very concerned.
And yes, I always have the lowest possible expectations for anything hitting theaters. 90% of them are putrid leeches whipped up to suck money out of the unsuspecting lowest denominator or their offspring before they have a chance to think about what hit them.
I have VERY high standards for film, I'm a complete snob. I've never admitted to it or thought I was, but conversations with friends about movies always end up with me looking and feeling that way. I love movies, don't get me wrong, I just hate cutting them slack. Every single detail in a movie can be manipulated, written, performed, or captured in a way that can improve the overall experience. Realizing that Hollywood scripts, and hell, the majority of scripts these days, don't take this into consideration, I stopped hoping a long time ago.
My low expectations saved me from feeling beaten and betrayed after I saw The Secret World of Arriety. It wasn't bad, but it didn't have any of the soul or masterful spirit of Miyazaki's work. I know it wasn't him, but I wanted it to be so badly. I had to reel those expectations in to enjoy it at all.

Anyways, on the subject of reboots, I'm gonna second robybang and say DON'T FIX WHAT AIN'T BROKE. Despite the fact that films have been being rebooted forever, there are definitive versions and those really don't need to be touched. Case in point, War of the Worlds and The Day the Earth Stood Still. NEITHER OF THOSE NEEDED THE HOLLYWOOD ANTI-THOUGHT TREATMENT. The originals are gorgeous in their own right and having people watch classics like that gives them appreciation for relics of a bygone era in our culture. Too many people don't like "old movies" for no reason whatsoever. Rebooting them doesn't solve this.
People should absolutely 10000% take bad movies and try to reboot them as fun experiences, if not good. It can be done. I grew up watching black and white monster movie schlock and that shit is downright horrendous from the acting to the special effects. But I love them, because they're fun and hilarious. You can make a movie fun without it being a masterpiece.
The color Flash Gordon movie with the Queen soundtrack. Terrible, yes. But the fun you have watching it is hard to beat.
Take a bad movie and play to the stuff about it that makes it laughable. Make people laugh at it if you have to, that's entertainment.

Why do people hate Tobey Maguire? Peter Parker is a nerd, not some jackass with some over top haircut that mumbles half the time like Andrew Garfield is. Tobey Maguire is a great actor and totally represented.

And the Emo Peter Parker, I found that fine. The Symbiote was supposed to make Peter Parker cocky and aggressive, and that's how he should've been.

The only thing I found really dissapointing in the spiderman trilogy was:
-Harry Osborn being killed off.
-Venom being killed off early and should've been added to the fourth.

Also, the new costume in the new film looks bollocks. I mean, come on, is this really good?

Yeah, this!

I'm sick of all the webcomic reboots people! lol. :D
By the way, check out my webcomic reboot.

The thread is about old tv shows being made into movies....like anything that died in the 70s.
The recycling has to stop sometime.

I don't like new spiderman...and this thing about the mystery around his mom and dad.
Spoiler! :
I read the comics. They are spies! case closed.

And yeah, Indie movies! They can be good too.

I fucking love the new Spider-Man. It's the only movie bringing something new this year. Superhero team? Every Fantastic Four and X-Men movie. Dark Knight Rises? Dark Knight cont. I know what to expect. Spider-Man is giving something we've seen before that was done well (sometimes) and new plot lines that we have NEVER seen before in movies. Amazing Spider-Man is the only movie worth watching this year if you want something new, ironically.

How's it something new? Spiderman films have already been done.

With web shooters? With the lizard? With Peter's parents? With his backstory? With actual Spider-Man fighting style? With Spider-Man humor? With Gwen Stacy being his first love? With 3D? With a Dark Knight tone? Just about everything aside from web swinging is new in this Spider-Man from what I've seen. A lot of it is from the Ultimate universe so even how he becomes spider-man is different:

Spoiler! :
He had genetic powers in him since he was a baby and the Spider is the catalyst that set it off. Better explanation imho.

What I especially love about this new Spider-Man is that they address his intellect. A some of his greatest villains are due to his scientific ingenuity like the lizard and venom. His villains are usually his own doing.

"Dark and Edgy" works if it's pulled off well. If not, it comes off hammy teenage bawwing. Nolan pulled it off with the Dark Knight saga, but I guess time will tell if it can be done with Spider Man. At least they're using a villain that wasn't used in the original trilogy, but I'm disappointed that it's the Lizard. Do you know who would be cool for a "Dark and Edgy" Spider Man movie?

What's darker or edgier than a villain who once tried to drive Spider Man insane with illusions and hallucinogenic gas?

Sorry, but the new Spiderman film looks really bad. I suppose when I watch it it'll probably get an 'Okay' or 'Decent' rating from me, but I'm not impressed.

The costume looks bad, Peter Parker looks like he's being portrayed wrong, web shooters don't look cool and not much of a backstory on Uncle Ben... kind of disappoints me, he also seems very out of character. I don't remember Peter Parker being rebellious like they're portraying him, I remembered him being a pussy, who developed super powers but then stood up to Flash Thompson in a fight.

If this is following the Ultimate Universe, then that's bad. The Ultimate Universe is awful considering how they messed up Wolverine.

Ultimate Spiderman was a masterpiece, at least at first. Up until a bunch of titles were canceled and they shoved Johnny Storm and the ice guy into Spidey's title.

Alright, let's say that Ultimate Spider-Man is bad. What does that have to do with the new movie?
Spoiler! :
nothing. XD Also, if memory serves, Peter Parker goes through that exact same transition as a character in Ultimate Spider-Man.

The new film stands separately from established Spider-Man material, just like how every other super hero movie doesn't 100% panel-to-panel follow any particular comic book issue or cartoon.
Honestly, I think Peter Parker could use this injection of personality. He's always been kind of a bland pussy. After his Uncle Ben trauma gets resolved, he practically has zero character development beyond juggling girls (which was never touched on in any of the films, ironically).

I still believe the only canon spidey is the one from that PS1 game. :B

Reboots: Whatever guys, if there's another director that thinks he can make things different in a good way, then why not?
If it flops, it flops, just that easy.

The Lizard is one of Spider-Man's greatest villains. It's like fighting a friend you helped turn into a monster. Imagine Superman fighting Jimmy or Batman fighting Gordon. The Lizard is, and for a long standing, Spider-Man's most personal villain.
