To answer both of your questions: This is a gift for somebody. Make it something they'd want! Do your best with the quality, and the content should be something they'd like. So, draw their characters if you think they'd like that. If not, or if they don't have characters, do a little research to figure out what they might like (favourite fandoms, colours, etc).

For the gift elves, yes, it will start on/after the 24th, and you'll have to get it done quickly. For the main part of SS, the notifications have already been sent out.
