Premium Subscriptions are Here!

Postby Admin » August 2nd, 2009, 10:26 pm

Premium Subscriptions are finally here!

Premium Subscriptions are here! You can get yours now from the Donate page. Additionally, we have departed from the Donator Code system and have adopted a Subscription system instead. You can now purchase subscriptions for your webcomics on the Donate page. In the near future, you will be able to buy subscriptions for other people's webcomics (i.e. as a gift) as well.

Donator Subscriptions Extended
Last week when Premium Subscriptions were announced, I promised that all current Donator comics would have their subscriptions extended an additional 3 months. And now they have been!

Premium Subscriptions
Premium Subscriptions include all of the benefits of a Donator Subscription, as well as:

    1) Custom Domain Names. For the first time ever on Smack Jeeves, you are able to set a custom domain name for your webcomic.

For example, if your current Smack Jeeves address is mycomic.smackjeeves.com, and you own mycomic.com, you are now able to set mycomic.com as your custom domain name with a Premium Subscription. All of your site's pages will be available on mycomic.com. You also have the option of either keeping your old domain as a mirror or redirecting its traffic to the new domain.

Note: You must already own or purchase your own domain name from a domain name registrar such as GoDaddy in order to host it with us.

    2) Ability to Set Up Email for up to 50 email addresses.

If you're hosting a custom domain name with us, you're most likely going to want to be able to receive email at that domain name, right? Well, we've made that possible with the Premium Subscription service. You'll be able to create up to 50 email addresses/accounts which will be accessible through webmail, IMAP and POP.

    3) Additional File Hosting. The new Premium Service also allows you to upload additional files, such as layout images, stylesheet files, zip files, bonus downloads, whatever you want.

Additionally, Premium Subscriptions increase the comic size limit to 5MB per page.

Money-Back Guarantee
If you do decide to purchase a Premium Subscription, you will have 60 days to ask for a refund if you are not satisfied with the service. Simply contact us at any time if you want to cancel for a refund.

Donator Discount
If your webcomic currently has active Donator status, you will be eligible for a special discount, based on how much time you have left on your Donator Subscription.

Unused Donator Codes
If you currently have any unused Donator Codes, you can still activate them at any time. If you are planning on upgrading to a Premium Subscription, make sure you activate any unused Donator Codes on your comic before upgrading in order to receive the maximum discount possible! We realize some people might forget, in which case we will provide assistance if you contact us.

Have any questions? I'll be happy to answer them here, or feel free to contact me via PM or through the Contact form on Smack Jeeves.

I probably won't be upgrading anytime soon but how do you know who has upgrading.

I may be adding a section that shows all Premium Subscribers in the future, if that is something they might be interested in. We shall see.

Also, thanks to http://www.bandmatescomic.com/ for being our first customer! You rock!

O.o I was first? Wow, can't believe it. Your welcome. Glad ya'll did it, takes a lot of the mess of moving to a different host and all that other crap when your webcomic becomes big enough for one to think they need more devotion to it. Works well from the looks of it, got the email and everything else done up. Very impressive, good pricing to considering that it's now basically a full on web hosting site, besides not registaring domain names. A webhosting site devoted to webcomics...genius.

May I ask how long it takes to get the comic linked up with the custom domain name?

Pretty much everything gives a two day warning. But it only took about two hours for mine to work it's way over. Although, I've had the domain name registered and redirecting to the smackjeeves site for a month or so now. So that may or may not have had something to do with it.

ok thanks, I think I saw something like that pop up, but I hastily clicked away from it. I guess I'll put a warning in the comic profile for now....

Wait did you guys switch allegiances from DreamHost to GoDaddy? I remember there used to be a DreamHost advertisment kicking around and now it's gone. Now if we were to get the premium membership, could we register with any hosting service? Because on that note I was wondering is anyone could vouch for any service in particular?

I would suggest something more mainstream, for safety and user friendly reasons. I used "network solutions" . They get the job done, but they certainly could be better.

We haven't "switched allegiances," or anything of the sort. The smackjeeves.com domain name is registered through GoDaddy, while our servers are rented from HostGator and InterServer.

In the world of web site hosting, you need 2 things: a domain name, and a server to host on. You do not need to buy both of these from the same company; in fact, most people don't. A domain name registration is a relatively simple process which simply tells the internet what IP address (i.e what server) to associate with that domain name.

So the answer is yes, you can register your domain name from any registrar you'd like. I personally recommend GoDaddy; I've registered all of my domain names through them. I would also search the internet for a coupon code before buying your domain name from them to save a few bucks.

I figured that this would get a faster response here.

I would very much like to use my shiny new premium subscription to host my style sheets separate from the rest of my files. I uploaded it to the extra file section, however, I cannot for the life of me figure out what the file path is supposed to be to call it in my layout. Where is this information available? When I select view, it just prompts me to download it and give no indication of the file path i am downloading it from.

Ah... in my browser, css files weren't prompted for download, so I didn't realize that was a problem. I can see that in Internet Explorer and possibly other browsers they do get prompted for download, so I'll have to fix that.

As for the location, all files are available at http://www.yourdomain.com/files/whatever. I'll add this bit of information to the Files page.

1) I added the file path to the files area.

2) It's strange, but the default behavior for certain browsers is to download css files rather than display them as a text file (try http://www.smackjeeves.com/style.css). Odd, considering their mime-type is "text/css". Of course, this doesn't matter when you're referencing your css files in your HTML. Anyway, just wanted to let you know everything is normal on that front.

By the way, if anyone had tried to purchase a subscription and was experiencing problems, PayPal was actually down on Monday. Go figure.
