This Amazing Screw On Head stuff is amazing.

They capture Mike Mignola's style perfectly.

I'd have to say Lady and the Tramp. Seriously. I love pretty much all the Disney animated movies, but they did DOGS for that one. Has anyone ever tried to draw dogs as main characters and have it turn out like THAT?? Seriously.

Unfortunately, I've never seen any other decent western animation. Mostly because I like comics better, and I couldn't find it online.

Anastasia and The Iron Giant; something about those two films have stuck with me for the longest time ♥ Also, Lilo & Stitch, partly because of the gorgeous Hawaiian backdrop they've given to the whole movie, but also because of Chris Sander's kick-ass style.

Persopolis (sp?) was wonderful, along with the Triplets of Belleville!

I highly recommend Ralph Bakshi's Heavy Trafficadult content

Oo, I haven't seen that one before! Looks crazy weird and different compared to what I know of his work!

eishiya wrote:This one was mentioned in... some other thread here? The Triplets of Belleville is probably the best I've ever seen. Haven't seen the whole movie yet, but it's in my Netflix queue.

The Triplets of Belleville is INDEED a beautifully done movie, with very minimal dialogue... which imho makes the story STRONGER. It's a story that can be told practically without words! (I first saw it in French, thinking that there were no subtitles, and then saw it again in English. It was pretty much the same to me)

THOUGH: The Triplets of Belleville is created by a French company. Is that considered to be in the Western Animation category?

Seriously? Is there any particular reason? Then again, I can't explain what it is about Disney cartoons that I don't like, personally.

THOUSANDS OF REASONS. So many, many reasons to hate Ralph Bakshi, but to sum it up in one sentence:

ETC ETC ETC

Hmm, sounds like someone hates the PERSON behind the magic, rather than the CREATIONS Bakshi makes, himself! This feels more like a topic that should be "behind the animations/creations"... Which can get really dirty real fast. I mean--COMMON--it's the entertainment business, people! 8D

For me, I've seen Bakshi's films, like American Pop, Lord of the Rings, and Mighty Mouse...

gun21 wrote:Bakshi simply shoots a film with no foresight or thought of "Do my characters emote properly? Does this gesture create a clear silhouette? Should we render to create a sense of apeal?"

In American Pop, it definitely doesn't feel like the characters need to have a defining silhouette. It's a story about ROCK MUSIC, and the evolution of it, by re-telling a story of his own. The emotion and feeling of each character is portrayed quite clearly. It's a really great film if you ask me :] And very moving. A lot of the storyline parallels events that have happened in real life at some point in time... I pretty much cried!

gun21 wrote:Ralph Bakshi is the sole reason why there will never be a 2D/CG/any type of animated feature film that is rated above PG. He convinced a bunch of studios that he would revolutionize animation...

I know it's not a feature film, but if it weren't for Bakshi, I don't think John K would have had his start in the industry (with Mighty Mouse)! After Mighty Mouse was pretty much done, a lot of the animators from that production moved on. John K created a team and started Spumco! Where Ren and Stimpy was born. :)

As much as you're bashing Bakshi, you've gotta give him SOME credit! And if you haven't seen those particular films he's created, at least try watching the first 20 minutes of 'em. IMHO it looks different compared to the other things he's known for.

=============================

OK, now it's my turn to say my favorite western animations!

I grew up watching a lot of Disney, and have always loved Aladdin and The Rescuers Down Under. Though, my love for Don Bluth's work has probably been stronger. I watched All Dogs Go to Heaven SO MANY TIMES. And Fifel Goes West is a fun tale! I love how Don Bluth has considerably 'darker tales' compared to Disney flicks, and are very down-to-earth. Anastasia is a much lighter film compared to the rest, but it still has the dark undertone of Rasputin and how he represents a hellish nightmarish creature/person :o Very intriguing!

I also really enjoy cartoons from the 50's and before. The animation style of the commercials and short films are so much fun! Have ya'll heard of Gerty the Dinosaur? And I love those old Disney cartoon Donald Duck shorts!

And how can I forget!!!!!! I really really LOVE Warner Brothers! I cannot get enough of their cartoon shorts from the 60's and 70's. A golden time imho! And since I'm on the subject, maybe someone can recommend a good box set of WB cartoon shorts that are NOT edited! (On Netflix they have a "movie" they made out of Donald Duck and Bugs Bunny shorts. :P They put new voices in certain areas and made a story out of a bunch of short cartoons that had nothing to do with each other  )

Ok, so I haven't really narrowed it down to an absolute favorite. But those are some cartoons I definitely enjoy watching! (Artistically and story-wise)

I say Tailspin and Duck tales.

Disneys adaption of Alice in Wonderland is bad, after reading the book, watching a theater performance and another film, it came out worst.

Western seems to refer to anything that's not anime/manga

The Boondocks season specifically gets my vote, thank you mr. Seung Eun Kim!

Bit of thread necromancy, but I didn't see a few things listed I thought belonged in the thread.

Batman: The Animated Series was amazing for its time. Considering it was marketed to the tween and young teen audience, the show was incredibly atmospheric and mature. The animation was smooth and moody, blended with fantastic voice talents, and some of the best writing DC had for its cartoons. It really helped to springboard DC's fairly robust animation side. Without it there likely never would've been a Justice League or Teen Titans.

Another name I didn't notice in the thread was Matt Groening. Sure, Simpsons might not be breathtakingly complex or gorgeous, but I think there's a lot to appreciate in the simplicity and accessibility of it. He was one of the first that introduced American audiences to the concept of "Hey, this is a cartoon, but it isn't just for kids. You dig?"

Anastasia is a great film, but every time I watch it now I can't help but think about the lectures I keep getting from my professors. The animators are horrible at staying on model with their characters. Just watch how the distance between Anastasia's eyes keeps changing between shots.

I also just saw the Iron Giant for the first time a few weeks ago FINALLY. ajhsdfjkahsdf

Has anyone said Avatar: TLA yet? Because best show. ever.

I am also currently obsessed with this video. I've got a decent backlog of youtube videos of fantastic animated shorts, most of which I've found through Cartoon Brew.

It was a great series, and a neat mix of Eastern and Western styles. I've got high hopes for the new cartoon, hopefully it won't be the colossal disappointment the movie was. :(

Oh god, don't ever mention that movie. The creators don't even mention that movie, or associate themselves. It's atrociousness is all Shyalaman's fault.

Korra is going to be amazing, hands down.

If we don't talk about it, the healing can never begin. :( Many movies stray from the source material. Not many mispronounce the names of major characters.
