looking for an art student to do a collaboration project w/

Postby cheezNH » July 19th, 2012, 1:36 pm

I'm writing a comparison piece on whether art school is necessary for comicking/manga/sequential art.
Would like to do a brief email interview and some sample comic pages (1-3 pages) based off a script/passage.

Art piece must be submitted by 8/6. PM me if you're interested!

if you're thinking monetary compensation, unfortunately there is none.

but it's a (imo) good creative exercise and your name/website will be linked to the article. show off what you learned in school!

Can you post the script/passage, if it doesn't ruin the purpose of the exercise?
Busy, busy.

I can't post the details of it as it might interfere with the project, but briefly:

The scene/passage is an excerpt from Haruki Murakami's Hard-Boiled Wonderland and the End of the World
The main character is assigned a job as the current "Dreamreader": a process intended to remove the traces of mind from the Town. He goes to the Library every evening where, assisted by the Librarian, he learns to read dreams from the skulls of unicorns.

The artist will be required to do his or her own storyboarding for this scene in 1-3 (or more, if need be) pages.

Art school can be helpful in becoming a sequential artist, but keep in mind that people who are attentive and self-motivated (like Scottie Young) can make it a career without the schooling. Also, if you get someone who isn't so good of a student or a school that doesn't really teach the basics of composition, panel layouts, and whatever, you're also not going to really get good results.

I'm only saying this because some people have misconceptions about art school being a waste of time, or inversely that anyone can become an artist once they go through one.

Anyway, good luck finding a participant.

I myself am an art student with a web comic. Getting some notoriety by just asking a few questions seems like a sweet deal.
I haven't been schooled in comic-centric stuff yet, but I have done a whole semester of basic stuff (life drawing, painting/colour theory etc.).

Question: When you say "art student," do you mean someone who is currently in art school / has gone through art school?
Is there any room for a self-taught artist in this?

Yeah, she would need at least one self-taught to compare against the schooled example.

Hi guys! Sorry for the delayed response. Work, life, you know the drill...

"Art student" = someone who is currently in/finished art school

I've already cleared the self-taught artist quota for the project. Thanks for all the questions!
