Need Colorist for Naruto fan comic about OCs

Postby Raichi » March 16th, 2012, 4:15 pm

About our collaboration I make the comic, you colour it and send the coloured version to me, I add text and text bubbles.

Looking for: You'll have to colour digitally and preferably add simple shading, so no soft brushes or blur tools for skin and clothing shading please. Just try to shade the way they do in the anime or like the family picture on top of this page. I'm okay with milder colours though, as long as they're not incomparable ;) here's a tutorial on how I shade.

How do we get to work? I am sick and tired of not getting things done, and want to commit myself to doing at least one page a week. I'd like to work with someone else who wants to make a similar change in their work ethic. We will and shall nag each other to get 1 page done every week, I believe that's the only way to get a comic up and running, continuity and keeping each other motivated. So who's up for it?!

Contact me: You can live chat with me on Skype; inuraichi. Send any mails to: konohamarutard@hotmail.com titled Comic Collab.

The first 5 pages were done traditionally (as was the line art of the family picture above) in 2010 so they're pretty old.
Oh and warning, it starts with childbirth so errrr... dunno if you're up for it haha, it's up to you! I warned you!

And these 2 pages were made over the past 2 weeks:

Page 7

That's how they will look like from now on, I can't be bothered to work traditionally, besides, my digital art is always way better because with traditional I just grab a pen and go with it xD that's also how I work digitally but with traditional you can't erase the pen, and I'm too lazy to sketch first and draw later haha.
Here's Koichi's teampicture (when the team first was formed so he and his team-mates are still young in the picture)

About the comic

Image
From left to right:
Koichi (15)
Shiro (7)
Nyoko (35)
Daitaro (39)
Yutaka (5)
Toshiaki (11)
Katsuro (9)
Yuudai (5)

Comic: Naruto Doujinshi (story revolves around Original Characters)

Story Bluntly: When Nyoko dies at age 35 of her 7th born baby the Miyagi family is broken, the oldest of the brothers; Koichi, forced to stop his genin missions to take her stressful place in the household. Stay tuned to see how the family copes.
The story is very dramatic but I have a tendency to make comics humoristic when working out the story.

Story Elaborately: During the second great ninja war Daitaro and Nyoko fall in love, and have their first child two years after the war. Not long could they enjoy their happiness together, as the third great ninja war was afoot. Though that didn't stop their love, they even conceived two more children during the war. When the third war was over people were still sketchy for a fourth, but gradually relaxed and life picked up it's normal pacing again. For everyone but Nyoko, who hid her sorrow behind a smile. But she wanted to hang in there, her family needed her, she even conceived more children amongst which a twin.
When she turned out to be pregnant again five years later she was entirely drained mentally, the birth asking enough of her physically to pass away. Daitaro, not wanting to cope with the loss of his beloved wife focussed himself on missions, leaving his seven children behind with noone but each-other to lean on. From here our story begins, from the eyes of the eldest and the sacrifices he and his brothers have to make for each other.

Village: Hidden Grass

Timeline: Naruto is born a year before Shiro, the fourth son, canon's will appear but only as side characters.

Main character: I'm planning to give all 9 family-members an even share of spotlight. In Nyoko's case flashbacks.

These characters all have a story to tell :(

Their personalities and everything have been in my head for so long I even made a dating sim teaser.

Screw it. If I can't find someone to color I'll just be posting blank line art pages.

You may want to put in your topic TITLE and near the very top of your post what you actually want from your collaborators. The fact that it's a Naruto comic is secondary. Maybe make the title something like "Need Colorist for Naruto fan comic about OCs." Most people want to know what you want up front. If they know that and are interested, they'll be more likely to read the rest of your post to see if the project itself interests them.

Also, this part is likely to make people stop reading:
How do we get to work? I am a dead lazy artist, who constantly jumps from project to project and never gets anything done [...]
Which is a shame since the rest of that paragraph is about how you want to change that. Maybe rephrase it as "I am sick of not getting things done, and want to commit myself to doing at least one page a week. I'd like to work with someone else who wants to make a similar change in their work ethic." or something similar. The fact that you're committed need to be stated as soon as possible there.

You might also want to take out the "Someone with good/decent coloring skills" bit. Artists all have different standards for what is good/decent, and many who are more than good enough for your project don't consider themselves good enough to be called good/decent. Get rid of that and get to the actual, well-defined requirements (which you've already written).

I think you should also make your story summary more interesting. You're more likely to get an artist if they're interested in the story, and right now you promise drama, but don't even give any examples of the sort of drama it will be. Show us. Give us more of the story, not just the beginning. What makes Koichi's new position stressful? How does he feel about this? What are some of the bigger challenges he faces? Your current summary really doesn't give a good idea of the story at all. It might to you because you know what happens, but we don't. To me personally, it doesn't sound like a dramatic premise at all, it sounds like a goofy "grown guy has to babysit a comically huge number of kids" comedy.

I like your willingness to go ahead with this without a colorist. However, I think you shouldn't just put the pages out as-is. Your lineart is clearly meant for coloring (or at least toning), and looks pretty bland on its own. The art is often the thing that gets people to read your comic at first (and then they decide whether they like the story enough to keep reading), so if it looks bland, you'll likely lose readers. Ink in a more final-art-friendly manner, or add colors/tones yourself. It'll be good practice, too. I think with a bit of practice you could easily do a page of week inked and colored.
Another thing you could do is just keep drawing and waiting for a colorist. There's nothing forcing you to start posting soon, and I think you'd have a better chance of getting a colorist for a project that's done or close to done, since they don't have to commit for an undetermined amount of time/pages. Moreover, for the kind of coloring you want, which is fairly quick to do, a week is a very long time to wait for the next inked page, so an artist is likely to get, erm, side-tracked.

Acting publicly angry, as you did in your June 17th bump, is a bad idea. It makes people less likely to want to work with you. Keep your anger to yourself. If you decide to stop looking for colorists, just stop bumping this topic (or PM a mod to get it locked to prevent others from posting in it), instead of expressing your anger about not finding anyone.
Busy, busy.

Thanks, I appreciate your insights and have done most of what you said.

I also agree my line-arts need coloring, though I must point out you're underestimating the amount of work that goes into the coloring. Especially with multiple characters and lines like these. It's not like paint where you press paint bucket and it fills what's in between, everything has to be pen-tablet painted in photoshop, and for the shading have to mix the colours themselves. If anything the coloring takes up at least twice as much time than the line-art. So doing it myself and waiting for someone to come by and say "hey, I'll colour your comic for you!" will probably just result in me not getting anything done. I need team-work to keep me motivated. I'm just one of those artist who totally goes for something aka is motivated, or can't work on something because the motivation just isn't there.
