A.Hinun's Sketchbook 2.o

Postby alohinun » July 18th, 2012, 9:57 am

Long story short, I want to seriously up my game as far as technical ability. I spend a lot of time drawing/painting/sketching already, but I think I need to do some more sketching based on observation/study rather than bits of illustration. I seriously need to work on landscapes (organic and architectural), and I'm not where I want to be anatomy/figural-wise. Thus, I'm going to make myself post at least five tolerably-resolved sketches daily. I'm yet to devise any specific rules within, but I'm planning some for implementation later, and am seeking feedback before I set them down for myself! Woo!

For now, here are some sketches to start! They're pretty much all figural. Oops.
(please forgive some of the out-of-focus in some of the sketches, I recently acquired a new scanner and I'm still fiddling with the settings. Unfortunately, it also blew out a lot of the subtler markmaking/shading in the sketches, hopefully I can figure out a way to have that not happen.)

Sketches mainly from observation (some I was studying leonardo's drawings, some looking at some photos I had taken of sculptures, one from a random pose generator on posemaniacs):

Sketches done without references/not from observation (mostly character-concept based):

Crit away! I'll be posting sketches specifically from today later.

Phew, I haven't been able to sketch quite as much as I'd like because I got caught up in comic work, but I did do some more figure sketches today! Here are some of them. I'll be doing more later.

Yikes! Haven't had much time for non-school related work, recently, but! Here is some stuff done over the past couple weeks:

Sketch and flats for character designs for the two main characters of a comic project I'm working on!

For whatever reason I draw everything at a slant, no matter how the paper is turned or held! This works for both digital and traditional stuff. I don't know why it's the case, but it is.

These a very lovely! You make great use of colors in your character designs, and your sketches have a great feel to them. I think it's your use of cross-hatching; it looks clean and natural.

My only critique would be there are occasionally wonky things going on with your hands, especially in the last picture. The guy second to the right has a very odd looking left hand, in part due to angle of the arm (I tried twisting my hand that way with my arm in that position; it's not actually physically possible. Is the thumb perhaps drawn on the wrong side?) and in part due to the lack of definition of lines, muscles, etc. in the coloring. Though, assuming this is a w.i.p, that might have been something you planned on going back to fix later. The girl on the far right also has some strange looking hands. With the right hand, she seems to be missing the webbing of skin between her thumb and index finger, and her left hand looks a bit too bit.

That's just nitpicking, though; overall, good job! :D

Thank you so much, guys! : D

@three: I see what you mean about that hand! Once I get a chance to work more on that image, I'll try to rework some of the muscle definition to give a clearer look at how the hand is twisted. If that doesn't work, I'll try posting it again! I think I should probably do some hand/feet studies soon, maybe I'll do some of those later this week once I get time! Thank you again for the critique; I really appreciate it!

Following are some more character designs, this time they're all for my upcoming comic project, tentatively named Silk Road.

Spoiler! :

Twins! Two of the group of main characters.

I.. got tired of spending unnecessary time re-inking the sketches for these, so the next two are pure pencil linework! Messy, but it (hopefully) gets the point across.

Some kid's sister!

Some guy! Nicknamed the Golden Lion of the East.

The one I'm least certain about as far as color-scheme is the last one. If anyone has any suggestions on him (or on any of the others, for that matter), those would be great! All that gold still clashes after a long time fiddling. :I

(whoops, I forgot to post this last night!)
Most of the images I post for February are going to (hopefully!) be geared towards some concept art for a developing project. Today, however, will be an exception!

2/2/2013: Spent the day in studio! Finished two big painting/drawing things. Unfortunately, because of the nature of this body of work, I don't feel like I can post it here. I'd like to keep the stuff on here geared towards more illustration-based work, so, sadly, while I did draw/paint, I can't show it here! Or, at least, I can't yet.

2/3/2013:
Knocked out some sketches for more character designs. Hoping tomorrow I can start work on some architectural studies or figure studies.

Some new stuff! A lot of the stuff I've been working on is (still) things relating to my studio practice that I can't post here. Oh well! I have (some) other stuff, too.

For the moment, have some WIP shots of this comic page I'm working on! Any feedback would be awesome. I'm a bit farther along since the color WIP, but, I'll post more later perhaps!

Well! It's been a little while, again. I've been working on more behind-the-scenes stuff.
The colors on the next two pages are complete. I'm still tweaking my process a little bit, so, if anyone has feed back, that would be great! : D

And thirdly, a little sketch WIP which I may or may not finish. I'm not totally happy with the colors in this one, either. Maybe it'll look better once it's finished! Or..something.

Those two pages look very nice but the use of thin lines around the panels is throwing me off. Its not a big distraction and it fits with the line work of the panels but I suggest seeing if thicker border lines would work for you. I think the borders I commented on is mostly an opinion/style I don't see a lot so feel free to not take it so seriously. You seem to have an issue with your line variation. Like the foot of the beast is closer to the viewer but its line weight is just as thin as the people in the back. The thin lines don't make the figures pop so my eyes just wonder the page instead of there being one thing that draws me in.

But then I look closely and you seem to be doing a line-art but also no lines at the same time? Also the brown boy's eyes in the bottom of pg. 1 just look hilarious to me and I pretty sure that wasn't what you intended. The googly-eyes would work better as shaded over eyes.

@Savoto: Wow! Thank you for those suggestions. :) I ended up deciding to move away from black panel borders overall for the comic pages. I think you're right when you said the borders looked awkward. I get what you mean about the line variation too; I tend to use a lot of hatching in an attempt to create depth/shading, but, I still need to work on it quite a bit... I ended up recently switching over to only using a brush for the comic pages, since I think using pens was part of the issue (more fluid to create line variation with a brush).

I have some new sketches! Some of them are concept work for Silk Road, some of them are not! Kudos to the person who can find my notes from my plants pathogens class in there. Though, my handwriting is... really bad.
